Welcome to Shy Valley!

Our region's best source for native plants, herbs, heirloom tomatoes and edibles

We are celebrating our 8th season growing wonderful plants for wonderful people.  We are ever grateful for our customers, both old and new, and we thank you for your support.

We are a native plant farm in beautiful Fall Branch,  a little village in Northeast Tennessee, near the Tri-Cities. Our main business is producing nursery propagated native plants, herbs, heirloom vegetable starts, and other uncommon and wonderful plants.

We invite you to look around our website, and return often as we are adding new content all the time.  A large part of our mission is to enhance public appreciation of our region's native plants, so, to that end, we have a growing collection of educational printablesphotographs, and garden plans,  all gathered together here on the site.  Please note, the words highlighted in orange are linked to another page of the website that pertains to that topic.  Just click on the word to go straight there.  We are busily preparing for spring, and are  taking orders for any special perennials, shrubs, or trees which you are hoping to plant soon.

Raspberry Wine Bee BalmWe grow an ever changing list of native plants, offering around 250 to 300 varieties at the height of our sales season (spring) and a more limited number the rest of the year.  This list includes grasses, ferns, shrubs, and trees as well as lovely wildflowers for sun or shade.  They are all nursery propagated or dug from cultivated (garden) populations.  We propagate a great deal of our plants ourselves, and get the balance from other reputable nurseries.

I also love  herbs, and we offer a great selection of these useful and beautiful plants.  We grow around 120 herbs for your pleasure, and we're happy to share with you the knowledge we have gained through many years of growing these plants under local conditions, and using them in our kitchen.

Our heirloom plant list for 2009 includes not only herbs and natives, but also more than 30 varieties of heritage tomatoes, hot and sweet (Hungarian and Italian) peppers, fantastic lettuces, quince, old roses, lilacs, peonies and many other old fashioned flowers.  If you haven’t discovered heirloom tomatoes, now’s the time.  Seedlings will be available here at the nursery and at all of the events listed on the Calendar page.

We have always been interested in plants that produce something you can eat.  Now that we are starting to settle into our new place, I am getting ready to increase our offerings in this regard.  Here is a list of the edibles we have now.  Look for this list to grow in the future.  All of these plants are attractive enough to include within an ornamental landscape.

Our plants are an excellent value.  We love it when people take the trouble to tell us how well our plants have done in their gardens, and that happens all the time.  The reason our customers experience that kind of success so often is that we grow species and varieties that do well in our area, and we grow them using methods that produce plants that are ready and able to thrive when they are planted in the landscape.  Our prices aren't always the lowest, but they are usually much lower than those of high end locally owned retailers.  Moreover, we do not have to charge sales tax on plants we sell in Tennessee, saving you another 10%. Sometimes plants of the same varieties we grow can be found for less at home stores or discounters, but you get what you pay for; remember, a plant that lives and thrives is always a better bargain than one that ends up dead. You are better off in the long run by coming to us for  natives and herbs. You can count on us to do our best to bring you unusual, beautiful, useful, quality plants at a price that is fair for both of us, and to share with you our knowledge, gained by tons of reading, talking with lots of gardeners of all levels of experience, and, most importantly, years of gardening in East Tennessee.  We will tell you all we know about that plant you are buying, and to even tell you why you shouldn't buy it, if we think it might not work for your situation.  We want your success story to come back to us!

Take a look at our printables for garden plans, tips on how to choose the right plants for your garden and even some recipes!

Thanks for visiting our web site.

Warmest wishes,

Christy
