Welcome to Shy Valley!  We are a family operation in beautiful Fall Branch, Tennessee, a little village in Northeast Tennessee, near the Tri-Cities. Our main business is producing nursery propagated native plants, herbs, heirloom tomatoes, peppers, eggplant and lettuce starts, and other uncommon and wonderful plants.   We also just started a flock of Icelandic Sheep, and have plans to expand our farm into other directions.  Click here to find out where our farm is going.  We invite you to look around our website, and return often as we are adding new content all the time.  Part of our mission is to enhance your appreciation of our region's native plants, so, to that end, we have a growing collection of educational printablesphotographs, garden plans,  and interesting recipes, all gathered together here on the site.  This is always a work in progress, so visit again, and feel free to comment on what you like, don't like, or would like to see.  Please note, the words highlighted in orange are linked to another page of the website that pertains to that topic.  Just click on the word to go straight there.

My background is that of a gardener and amateur ecologist whose hobby sort of took over.  What that means for you is that the plants that we offer are more than just the latest trendy money makers that many nurseries carry.  They are truly wonderful plants.  Some are rare and difficult to find in nature or in commerce, others are common in nature, but overlooked by the trade.  But, the attributes that make a plant desirable to a gardener often have little to do with those that the nursery industry values.

Raspberry Wine Bee BalmWe grow an ever changing list of native plants, offering around 250 to 300 varieties at any given time.  This list includes grasses, ferns, shrubs, and trees as well as lovely wildflowers for sun or shade.  They are all nursery propagated or dug from cultivated (garden) populations.  We just had a great spring as far as sales go, so we are out of a few things, but are ramping up production and scrambling to catch back up.  We do have lots of beautiful, healthy plants in stock, but the list is, for the moment, a little longer than what we actually have on hand.  When in doubt, just ask.  Chances are, if its native and it looks good in the landscape, we either have it, can get it, or know where to send you to find it at another nursery.

I also love  herbs, and we offer a great selection of these useful and beautiful plants.  We grow around 120 herbs for your pleasure, and we are more than happy to share with you the knowledge we have gained through many years of growing these plants under local conditions, and using them in our kitchen.

Our heirloom plant list for 2008 includes not only herbs and natives, but also more than 30 varieties of heritage tomatoes, hot and sweet (Hungarian and Italian) peppers, old roses, lilacs, peonies and many other old fashioned flowers.  If you haven’t discovered heirloom tomatoes, now’s the time.  Seedlings will be available at all of the events listed on the Calendar page.

We have always been interested in plants that produce something you can eat.  Now that we are starting to settle into our new place, I am getting ready to increase our offerings in this regard.  Here is a list of the edibles we have now.  Look for this list to grow in the future.  All of these plants are attractive enough to include in amongst your ornamental landscape.

Our plants are an excellent value.  We love it when people take the trouble to tell us how well our plants have done in their gardens, and that happens all the time.  The reason our customers experience that kind of success so often is that we grow species and varieties that do well in our area, and we grow them using methods that produce plants that are ready and able to thrive when they are planted in the landscape.  Our prices aren't always the lowest, but they are usually much lower than those of high end locally owned retailers.  Moreover, we do not have to charge sales tax on plants we sell in Tennessee, saving you another 10%. Sometimes plants of the same varieties we grow can be found for less at home stores or discounters, but you get what you pay for; remember, a plant that lives and thrives is always a better bargain than one that ends up dead. You are better off in the long run by coming to us for  natives and herbs. You can count on us to do our best to bring you unusual, beautiful, useful, quality plants at a price that is fair for both of us, and to share with you our knowledge, gained by tons of reading, talking with lots of gardeners of all levels of experience, and, most importantly, years of gardening in East Tennessee.  We will tell you all we know about that plant you are buying, and to even tell you why you shouldn't buy it, if we think it might not work for your situation.  We want your success story to come back to us!

We are also getting started with Icelandic Sheep.  Visit our sheep page, under construction.

Take a look at our printables for garden plans, tips on how to choose the right plants for your garden and even some recipes!

We value many things.  Clean air and fresh water. Flowers. Genetic diversity.  The beauty and complexity of life.  Children.  Quality of life (both ours and yours).  Local flavor.  Good friends.  Freedom.  Frogs.  Creativity.  Faith, in all its manifestations.  I hope these values are evident in everything we do, from the plants we grow and the way we grow them, to our dealings with you.  Enjoy the site, and come back to visit as it evolves.

Thanks for visiting our web site.  I hope you will make it to the farm someday soon.  Until then keep on gardening, and doing all the other things that bring joy into your life and into the lives of those around you.

Warmest wishes,

Christy

Not Cat Torture, just lovin'.  You may see these fellows, all grown up, at the nursery.  Yes, one is missing a paw, but I promise Rachael didn't do it!

Why did I buy those knee and elbow pads?

The Studio in progress.  Some people, when building a new structure, call a contractor.  Philip ordered new chisels.  Yes, someday he will make pottery again.  In fact, the studio is much more complete now than in this photo.  I just like this picture because it shows the craftsmanship...

The greenhouse in the early stages. Now it is covered and fitted with a great propagation set up.  Can't wait until leaves are spilling out of it in every direction.
