Shy Valley Farm The MASTER PLAN… Animal, Vegetable, Mineral…, and People The nursery is only a part, albeit a very important part, of an overall plan we have for our little farm. We are still plugging away at getting the nursery area finished and completely filled with display gardens. Part of the nursery area will contain my large, organic, kitchen garden. We may also add a blueberry patch and some row crops somewhere on the farm. We are considering becoming certified organic at some point. (Vegetable…) We also plan to make the most of our pastures by raising small livestock, including goats and sheep. We have just purchased several wonderful Icelandic Sheep that are just the beginning of the flock we hope to have here, and, of course, we have had dairy goats for a while, now. Guarding those animals is Mira, a rare Karakachan Dog, from Bulgaria. We hope to have, within the next year, two breeding pairs of these amazing animals. We are also going to add, very soon, chickens. (Animal…) Philip is wrapping up construction of his timber framed pottery studio, and will be making pots again really soon. (Mineral…) And, as for the people, we hope to, in time, make this a place that people really look forward to visiting. (I know you enjoy it now, too.) Our huge old barn will be undergoing a slow transformation from aging tobacco barn to a comfortable shelter in which to host gatherings of all sorts. Our display gardens will be dotted with benches and picnic tables to encourage folks to “stop and set a spell”. We'll have a bathroom. (Who'da thunk it?) We imagine that people will be inspired by our beautiful gardens, entertained by our contented animals grazing in the background, and soothed by our comfortable facilities and our warm welcome. School children will enjoy field trips to the farm to have fun while learning about nature, the small farm, organics, fine crafts, ecology, or other topics. All of this will take time, but we really feel that we are on the right course. We don’t have a hard and fast time table in place for most of our projects, but so many people seem interested in what we’re doing that I thought I would outline it for you. We really appreciate your business and the supportive words many of you have shared with us. You are what allows us to push this dream along. Thank you! |
